Kathleen’s parents were John Quinn & Margaret Hennessey. Unfortunately, I do not know a lot about either of these characters except what I can gleam from birth, death & census records.
Maggie, as she was known, was born in Hillbrook, Wicklow in 1882 to parents James Hennessy & Catherine (Kate) Kennedy. There was a lane at the back of my dad’s house in Hillbrook, leading to the Hennessy family home, although the house is long since gone & the lane overgrown. She was the youngest of 7 children born to this family. They were Mary-Ann, Thomas, Margaret, Susan, Michael (Mick), James, Catherine & Margaret.
Catherine & James were married in Carnew parish in 1862 but I don’t know anything of the family except that they lived in Shillelagh from ’62-64; Tinahely from ’64-’66, Tubberpatrick in ’66, Coolafancy from ’67-’76, Borkhill from ’76-’80 before moving to Hillbrook. It would seem that they settled there for the remainder of their lives. I have been unable to track most of the children from this family, so far, so cannot say for certainty what happened to each of them, except for Michael. He lived at home in Hillbrook with his parents until his marriage to Ann (Aunt Nan) Barnes in Coolfancy in 1918, when he was 49 & Ann was 20. They had several children together before his death in 1929. I do not know where he is buried but his wife Ann is buried with her 2nd husband in Coolafancy.
Catherine Kennedy
I know nothing of Maggie’s mother, Kate Kennedy, except that she was born in Co. Carlow. I have been unable to locate her birth/baptism & it is unlikely that I will uncover any further information about her at this stage. But she completed the 1911 census form herself & was able to read & write although 73 years old, which was very unusual at the time. Kate passed away in Hillbrook in 1918 & was thought to be 80 then, giving her a birth date of 1838 (ish!!!).
James Hennessey
James Hennessey was the son of Betty Byrne & John Hennessy who, at the time of their marriage, were living in Ballynultagh. They married in Clonmore in 1817 & to date I have found 4 children from this marriage; Sally b. 1821, James b. 1824, Anne b. 1827 & Patt b. 1829. I know that Anne married a Patrick Kelly from Carnew but know nothing of the other 2 children.
James’ profession was listed as labourer on all documents, presumably for the Coolattin Estate. James passed away in 1908 in Hillbrook at the ripe ol’ age of 84. The Hennessey family plot is in Tomacork but I have yet to visit this & determine who from the family is buried there & where the remainder are buried.
